statue はラテン語 statua(像・彫刻)に由来する。statua は *steh₂-(立つ)と結びつき、立った状態にしておくもの、つまり人や神などの姿を形にして立たせたものが原義である。
そこから、石や金属などで作った「像・彫像」を指すようになった。statue を見たら「立たせた形」と覚えると、station(立つ場所)・status(立っている状態)・static(動かず立ったままの)も関連づけやすい。
