ラテン語 sculptūra（彫ること・彫刻作品）は、sculpō（彫る・刻む）+ -tūra（行為や結果を表す）という組み立て。英語の sculpture は「彫刻」という芸術分野と、その作品を表す。材料から形を作り出す動作を、完成した立体作品につなげて覚えよう。
a marble sculpture は「大理石の彫刻作品」、study sculpture は「彫刻を学ぶ」。一つの作品なら a sculpture、芸術分野なら sculptureという使い分けになる。現代の彫刻には粘土で形を作ったり金属を鋳造したりするものもあるので、石を削る姿を入口に、立体の造形へ意味を広げたい。sculptor は、その作品を作る彫刻家。
