stencil は、古フランス語 estencele（火花）にさかのぼる「輝かせる・鮮やかに飾る」という系統の語から生まれたとされる。現在は、文字や模様を切り抜いた型紙、またはその型を使って描くことを表す。

use a stencil to paint letters は「型紙を使って文字を描く」。切り抜いた隙間に絵の具を付け、型を外すと同じ形の文字が残る。飾りを付ける仕事と、模様を写す道具を結び付けると、火花から型紙へという隔たりを整理できる。
