覚え方
virus はラテン語 vīrus（毒）を借りた語。現在はウイルスという微小な感染性のものを指し、語が作られた時代の「毒」という理解から、科学上の名称として意味が定まってきた。日本語の「ウイルス」と違い、英語では最初が「ヴァイ」に近い音になる。
flu virus はインフルエンザウイルス、computer virus はコンピューターウイルス。後者は、生物のウイルスになぞらえた名前で、ほかのプログラムやファイルに入り込み、複製を広げるものを指す。複数形は viruses。生物とソフトウェアの二つの場面を、「入り込んで広がる」という記憶の手掛かりで結び付けるとよい。
