werewolfの語源と覚え方

werewolf は古英語 werewulf(狼男)を受け継ぎ、wer(男)+ wulf(狼)という組み合わせ。「人間でありながら狼になるもの」という伝承上の存在を表す。冒頭の were は、ここでは be 動詞の過去形として読む部分ではなく、古い「男」の語に由来する。
物語で a werewolf appears とあれば、人と狼の姿を行き来する怪物が現れる場面を想像できる。複数形は werewolves で、wolf → wolves と同じく f が v に変わる。人の側を表す were と、狼の wolfに分ければ、長い綴りの意味と複数形を一緒に押さえられる。
