中英語 whirren から。機械や羽根が高速で回るときの、ヒューン・ブーンという連続音を表す。
音をまねた語で、whirl（ぐるぐる回る）・whirlwind（つむじ風）と響きも意味も近い。カメラや扇風機、ヘリコプターの音に使う。
綴りは whir と whirr の両方があり、-ing 形は whirring と r を重ねる。
