ラテン語の「共に」＋「来る」で、原義は「集まる」。その直系が動詞 convene（招集する・集まる）で、re- が付けば reconvene（再び集まる）、行為者は convener。集まりが名詞になったのが convention で、「大会」の意味と、「皆が従う取り決め→慣習・協定」の意味を併せ持つ。形容詞 conventional は「慣習どおりの・型どおりの」、否定形の unconventional は「型破りな」で、評価の語としてよく使われる。
もう一つの流れは「うまく合う」方向で、conveni の系統が convenient（都合のよい）・convenience（便利さ）を作り、否定の in- が付けば inconvenient・inconvenience になる。宗教者が集まって暮らす場は convent（修道院）。フランス語を経た covenant（契約・聖約）も同じ語とされる。「一緒に来る」から「集会」「慣習」「好都合」へ枝分かれした道筋で覚えると、意味の遠い語もつながる。
