ラテン語 domus（家）と、その主人を指す dominus / domina が出発点になる。domest は家そのものに近く、domestic（家の→家庭の・国内の）、domesticity、undomestic。domin は主人の側で、dominate（主人としてふるまう→支配する）、domination、dominion（支配権）、predominate、domineering（高圧的な）、condominium（共同の支配権→分譲住宅）。dominus の女性形 domina からは dame・madame・damsel・demoiselle・mademoiselle が出て、damselfly・damselfish のように生き物の名にもなった。
dome は「家・館」から丸屋根の意味に移った語で、イタリア語 duomo（大聖堂）と同じもの、domain は「主人の持ち場→領域」。意外なのは danger で、中世ラテン語の「領主の支配力」から「相手の意のままになる状態→危険」へ移ったとされ、endanger・endangered species まで同じ家族に連なる。demesne（領主の直営地）も綴りは離れるが同系。dom を見たら「家」か「主」かをまず決め、domin なら支配、domest なら家庭、と切り分けるとよい。
