覚え方
ポルトガル語 amouco（逆上して暴れる）が英語に入った語。我を忘れて手当たり次第に暴れ回る、という状態をそのまま表す。
現代ではほぼ run amuck / run amok の形でしか使わず、「暴走する・手がつけられなくなる」の意味。人にも物事にも使え、The children ran amuck in the store.／Inflation ran amok. のように言う。
綴りは今では amok の方が一般的で、amuck は古風な変種という位置づけ。発音はどちらも「アマック」に近い。
