英語arbiter仲裁者・判決者

ラテン語 arbiter（証人・仲裁人・裁判官） をそのまま受け継いだ語。争いの場に居合わせて見届ける「立会人」が、そのまま白黒をつける役の名になった。

現代では the final arbiter（最終的な決定権を持つ者）、an arbiter of taste / fashion（趣味や流行の権威）のように、「何が正しいかを決める立場の人」を指す。

arbitrate（裁定する）・arbitration（仲裁）・arbitrator（仲裁人）・arbitrary（裁定者の一存で決まる→恣意的な）と同族で、arbitr- は「裁定」。arbiter はやや文語・比喩寄りの語である点が、実務語の arbitrator との違い。
