古フランス語 ataindre（達する）から。中身は *ad-（〜へ）と *teh₂g-（触れる）で、「目指す所まで手が届く」が原義。
英語の attain は reach より努力の含みが強く、attain a goal（目標を達成する）・attain the age of 18（十八歳に達する）のように使う。*teh₂g- は tangible（触れられる）・contact（接触）・intact（無傷の）と共通で、tang・tact は「触れる」。
