覚え方
ラテン語 cōnus（円錐） を受け継いだ語。頂点から底面へすぼまっていく立体、つまり円錐が原義で、そこから円錐形をしたもの全般に広がった。
ice cream cone（アイスのコーン）、traffic cone（三角コーン）、pine cone（松ぼっくり）のように、形が円錐なら植物でも道具でも cone と呼ぶ。目の網膜にある錐体細胞も cone で、桿体細胞 rod と対で覚える。
形容詞は conical（円錐形の）、conic sections は円錐曲線。cone を見たら「先がとがってすぼまる形」。日本語の「コーン」は corn（トウモロコシ）も指してしまうが、両者は別語なので混同しないこと。
