bevelの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 batō(口を開ける・あくびする)に遡る語。「ぽかんと開いた角度」が原イメージで、直角ではない開いた角度、そこから木材や板の「斜めに削った縁」を指すようになった。
面を斜めに落とす加工そのものも bevel と呼ぶ。角を落として傷つきにくくしたり、光を反射させたりする目的で使う。「角を落として開いた面」と覚えるとよい。
補足: bevelled edge(面取りした縁)、bevelled mirror(縁を斜めに削ったミラー)、bevel gear(軸の向きを変えるかさ歯車)が代表的な用例。日本語でも「ベベル加工」「ベベルギア」として通じる。
