覚え方
desk（机）+ top（一番上の部分） で「机の天板」。文字どおりの合成語で、まず「机の上」という場所を指し、そこから「机上で使うのに適した大きさ」の意味が生まれた。
コンピュータの世界ではこれが二重に効いていて、床置きではなく机の上に載る機械が desktop computer、そして画面上で書類やフォルダを広げる仮想の机の上が desktop（デスクトップ画面）である。desktop は現実と画面の「机の上」と二段で覚えるとよい。
補足: 対になるのは laptop（膝の上）。desktop publishing（DTP、卓上出版）は机上の機材だけで印刷物を作る手法を指す。
