旧世界の熱帯地域に自生する多年生のつる性植物。3小葉からなる葉と、芳香のある紫色のエンドウに似た花が房状に咲き、その後に食用可能な栗色の豆莢ができる。観賞用やインド亜大陸で野菜として栽培されることがあり、時にはDolichos属に分類されることもある。
