古英語 elnboga（肘）= eln（肘尺という長さの単位）+ boga（弓・アーチ） が、中英語 elbowe を経て elbow になった。つまり「腕の、弓なりに曲がるところ」という即物的な名づけである。
eln の側には *Heh₃l-（曲げる・肘）、boga の側には *bʰewgʰ-（曲げる・たわめる） があり、二重に「曲がり」を含む。だから elbow は体の関節だけでなく、パイプや道の急な曲がりも指し、動詞では elbow one's way through the crowd（人混みを肘で押し分けて進む）のように使う。at one's elbow（すぐそばに）・elbow room（ゆとり）も定番。
*bʰewgʰ- は bow（弓・お辞儀）・bough（枝）に、eln は長さの単位 ell に残る。ell（腕の長さ）+ bow（曲がり）と分けて読むと綴りごと記憶できる。
