中英語 enchauntement のもとは incantō（呪文を唱えて魔法をかける）+ -mentum（行為の手段や結果を表す名詞をつくる）。incantō は in-（中へ）+ cantō（歌う） で、相手に向けて歌いかけること。
英語の enchantment は「魔法（をかけること）」と「魅了」の両方。under an enchantment は魔法にかかった状態、the enchantment of the place はその場所の持つ魅力。
cantō は *keh₂n-（歌う）にさかのぼり、chant（詠唱）・incantation（呪文）・accent と同じ。-mentum は今の -ment。
