古英語 fefor（熱・発熱） を受け継いだ語で、*dʰegʷʰ-（燃える・熱い） に遡る。体が内側から燃えている状態、というのが出発点のイメージ。

そこから病気の熱だけでなく、hay fever（花粉症）のような病名、さらに「熱狂・興奮」の比喩へ広がった。fever pitch（最高潮）、football fever（サッカー熱）などが後者。

形容詞は feverish（熱っぽい・熱に浮かされた）。fever は「燃えている状態」と押さえておくと、体温の話と熱狂の話が同じ一語で説明できる。

英語では day（day・today）、foc（focus・focused）、fever / febr（fever・afebrile）、fuel / fus（fuel・fusil）、dear / dar（dear・darling）、dwind（dwindle・dwindling）などの形で現れ、熱・燃焼から「昼・日」「熱」「火を集める場所」や、そこから派生した価値・親愛の意味へ広がる。
