ラテン語 forceps から。formus + -ceps(〜を捕らえるもの・取るもの) という組み立てで、後半の -ceps がこの道具の働きをそのまま表している。
医療では、分娩や手術でものをつかんで引き出す器具、つまり鉗子を指す。-s で終わるので複数形のように見えるが、単数でも複数でも forceps と同じ形を使う。
日常語では tweezers(ピンセット)・pliers(やっとこ)が似た働きの道具を指すが、forceps は医学の場面に限られる硬い語になっている。
