foreign は古フランス語 forain（外部由来の、他国に属する） から来た。自分のいる場所の「外から来たもの」という感覚が、現代の「外国の・外国人の」という意味につながっている。
その背景にある *dʰwer-（壁の開口部で出入り可能） は、外へ通じる戸口のイメージを持つ。foreign を見たら「こちら側ではなく、戸口の向こうから来たもの」と覚えると、foreigner（外国人）や foreign-made（外国製）の意味も自然に理解できる。
