ラテン語 aliēnus（他者の・異質な・敵対的な）に由来し、alius（他の・別の・異なる）+ -ēnus（〜に関する形容詞を作る要素）と分けられる。「自分たちとは別のものに属する」という意味から、「異国の」「外国人の」、さらに「異質な」へ発展した。
aliēnus のもとにある *h₂el-（彼方の・他の）は、「こちら側ではない、向こう側のもの」という感覚。alien country は「外国」、alien species は「外来種」、alien はSFでは「地球外生命体・宇宙人」を指す。alien を見たら「他の場所・他の仲間に属する」と覚えるとよい。
