中英語 fonne（愚か者・だまされやすい人）から。もとは「ばか者」や「かつぐ」に関わる語で、人をからかうような戯れが出発点である。

そこから「ふざけ・遊び」へ移り、18 世紀に現在の「楽しみ」の意味が定着した。make fun of（からかう）や for fun（面白半分に）といった言い方には、古い「かつぐ」の感覚が残っている。

同じ fonne からは fond（もとは「愚かな」、今は「〜が好きで」）が来ている。品詞にも注意が必要で、fun は基本的に名詞（have fun＝楽しむ）。funny は「おかしい・奇妙な」であって「楽しい」の形容詞ではない点を区別したい。
