hierarchy は、hiero-（聖なる・聖職者的）+ -archy（統治体制）という組み合わせで、もとは「聖職者による統治」を表した。ラテン語 hierarchia（階層制・位階制度）を経て、宗教組織に限らず、順位付けされた階層や権限の体系を指すようになった。
-hiero- は「聖なるもの」、-archy は「支配・統治」と覚えると、hierarchy の意味をつかみやすい。hierarchia の背景には、物を組み合わせる *h₂er- と、最初の・上位の *h₂ergʰ- があり、上位から順に組み合わされた構造というイメージにつながる。
