ironicの語源と覚え方

irony(言葉と反対の意味)+ -ic(〜に関する)。背後にはギリシャ語 εἰρωνικός(知らぬふりをする・不誠実な)があり、その元の εἴρων は「わざと知らないふりをする人」、-ῐκός は「〜のような」を作る部品である。
つまり原義は「とぼけてみせる人のような」。知らないふりで問い返して相手の矛盾をあぶり出すソクラテスの問答がこの語のもとで、そこから「言葉と本心が裏腹な・皮肉な」になった。
現代では言い回しだけでなく、消防署が火事になるような状況の皮肉にも使い、こちらは situational irony と呼ばれる。sarcastic が相手を刺す当てこすりなのに対し、ironic は裏返しの言い方そのものを指す。
