英語 irony(反語・皮肉な状況)は、ラテン語 īrōnīa(反語・皮肉)をほぼそのまま受け継いだ語で、部品に分解できる合成語ではない。
「言おうとしていることと逆の意味を表す言い方」という原義がそのまま残り、言葉の上での「反語」や、期待と食い違う「皮肉な状況」を指すようになった。
同じ語源の語には ironic(皮肉な)・ironical(皮肉めいた)がある。irony は「見た目と逆の意味・結果」というイメージで覚えるとよい。
