latestの語源と覚え方

中英語 lateste（最後の・最新の） から。古英語 læt（遅い）に最上級を作る -est が付いた形で、古英語には latost（最も遅い・最後の）という形もあった。「いちばん遅くにできた＝いちばん新しい」という発想の転換がこの語の面白いところ。
the latest news（最新のニュース）・the latest model（最新型）のように定冠詞と使う。名詞としても働き、Have you heard the latest?（最新の話、聞いた？）。
混同しやすい last と押さえ分けたい。last は「最後の（もう続きがない）」、latest は「今のところ最新の（続きがある）」。his last book は遺作、his latest book は最新作。at the latest（遅くとも）は元の「遅い」の意味が残った表現。
