ラテン語 lectuāria が元で、英語 litter はもともと家畜に敷く寝わらを指した。さかのぼる *legʰ- は「横たわる」。
寝わらを床いっぱいにまき散らすことから「散らかす・ごみを捨てる」の意味が生まれ、littered は「ごみが一面に散らばった」状態を表す。cat litter（トイレ砂）や a litter of puppies（ひと腹の子）には古い「寝床」の用法が残っている。
同じ *legʰ- からは lie（横たわる）・lay（置く）・ledger が出ている。
