littleの語源と覚え方
覚え方
古英語 lȳtel（小さい・わずかな） を受け継いだ語。lout（かがむ・身を低くする）+ -le（〜しがちな） と分解でき、「身を低くしている＝小さい」という発想。
背景の *lewd-（かがむ・身を低くする） は「体を縮める」イメージで、大きさが小さいことも量が少ないことも同じ語で表す。英語での最大の注意点は、a little（少しはある）と little（ほとんどない） のように、冠詞の有無で肯定・否定の含みが逆になること。
比較級・最上級は less / least と、まったく別の形を使う（littler / littlest は主に大きさについての口語）。「かがんで小さくなる」を原像として押さえておくとよい。
