覚え方
古英語 miċel（大きい・多くの）から。もとは「大きい」という語で、そこから量の「多い」へ移り、語末が削れて much の形になった。
現代の要点は使い分けである。much は数えられない名詞（much water, much time）、many は数えられる名詞（many books）。しかも肯定文で much を使うと堅く響くため、日常では a lot of が普通で、much は not much / how much / too much のように否定文・疑問文・強調の形で生きている。
比較変化は much・many – more – most で、元の語とはまるで違う形。副詞としては比較級を強め、much better（ずっと良い）・much too big（大きすぎる）となる。この much は「はるかに」で、量ではなく程度を押している。
