mentor（助言者・指導役）+ -ship（関係・立場）。「指導役として導く関係」。mentor はギリシャ神話の人物 Μέντωρ（メントール）の名前から来ていて、英雄の息子を導いた助言者にちなむ。

社内制度の mentorship program（メンター制度）として、先輩社員が新人の相談役になる仕組みの話でよく出る。指導される側は mentee。

-ship は friendship（友情）・leadership（指導力）・membership（会員資格）と同じ「関係・立場」。
