古英語 nāwþer（どちらも〜ない）を受け継いだ語で、もとの形は nāhwæþer。否定 +「二つのうちどちら」という組み立てで、either に否定がかぶさったものと考えればよい。
「どちら」を担う部分は *kʷ-（疑問を表す語幹）に由来し、what・which・whether と同じ流れ。だから neither は「二つのうち、どちらでもない」という限定が効いていて、三つ以上には本来 none を使う。
用法は neither A nor B（A も B も〜ない）と Neither did I.（私もしなかった）が中心。発音は米で「ニーザー」、英で「ナイザー」が優勢だが、どちらでも通じる。
