アングロ・ノルマン語 nusaunce（害・迷惑）を借りた語。もとは「他人に加える害」を指す言い方で、法律用語としての性格が強かった。
現代英語では「厄介なもの・迷惑（な人・行為）」を表し、What a nuisance!（まったく面倒だ）のように日常でも使う。一方で法律では public nuisance（公的な妨害行為）のように、他人の権利を妨げる行為を指す専門語として生き続けている。
人にも物にも事にも使えるのが特徴で、He is a nuisance.（彼は厄介者だ）と言える。実害というより「うんざりさせる迷惑」という程度を押さえておくとよい。
