覚え方
potassa（苛性カリ）+ -ium（金属元素の名を作る接尾辞） で作られた元素名。19 世紀初めに電気分解で単離されたときに命名された。
potassa の元をたどると英語の potash（カリ）で、これは pot（鍋）+ ash（灰）。木の灰を鍋で煮詰めて取り出した成分が、そのまま名前になっている。「鍋の灰」から取れる金属と覚えるとよい。
-ium は金属元素の目印（sodium ナトリウム、calcium カルシウム、magnesium マグネシウム）。なお日本語の「カリウム」は potassium とは別系統の呼び名で、元素記号 K もそちらに由来する。
