ラテン語 saliō（跳ぶ・飛び跳ねる） の現在分詞 salientem「跳び出している」に遡る。英語では「突き出た」、そこから「目立つ・重要な」という意味になった。覚えるときは、たくさんある情報の中から、大事な点が目に飛び込んでくる 像を手掛かりにしよう。
