フランス語 prominent（突出した・顕著な）は、*per-（前に・通り抜ける）と *men-（考える）に結びつく語。前へ突き出して人の目に入り、さらに人々の意識や考えに上るものというイメージから、「目立つ・顕著な・著名な」という意味になった。
