覚え方
out-（外部へ・超えて）+ standing（立っていること）で、「外へ突き出て立っている」が原義。外に張り出して周囲から目立つことから、outstanding は「目立った、際立った」、さらに人や業績について「優れた」という意味になった。
一方、支払いや処理がまだ済まず、義務がその場に「立ったまま」残っているというイメージから、「未払いの・未処理の」も表す。outstanding balance は「未払い残高」のこと。
外向きを表す *ūt- と、立つことを表す *steh₂- を手がかりに、outstand は外へ突き出て抵抗する、outstanding はそこから目立つ・残ると覚えるとよい。
