standingの語源と覚え方
覚え方
英語 standing は動詞 stand（立つ）に、名詞をつくる語尾 -ing を付けた語。中英語 standyng（立っていること）がそのまま「立っている状態」を表す名詞になった。
しっかり立っている状態から、社会の中で「しっかりした位置を占めている」というイメージが生まれ、「地位・評判」の意味になった。ぐらつかず立ち続けている、という感覚から「持続している」の意味にもつながる。
stand の根は印欧祖語 *steh₂-（立つ）。standing に限らず、stand を含む語はこの『立つ』イメージで読み解ける。
