覚え方
中期フランス語 obscurité から入った語で、obscure（不明瞭な・あまり知られていない）+ -ity（形容詞から抽象名詞を作る語尾）。obscure は *(s)ḱeh₃-（闇・影）にさかのぼる。
「暗くてよく見えないこと」が原義で、そこから二方向に広がった。一つは文章や説明の分かりにくさ、もう一つは世に知られていないこと。
rise from obscurity は無名から世に出ること、die in obscurity は忘れられたまま世を去ること。同じ *(s)ḱeh₃- からは shadow・shade が出ている。
