後期ラテン語 cīsōria（切る道具）が、古フランス語 cisoirs、中英語 sisours を経て今の「はさみ」になった。広く切る道具を指した語が、2 枚刃で紙や布を切る道具に絞られたと捉えるとよい。

sc- の綴りは 16 世紀からで、中世ラテン語 scissor（仕立て屋）に結びつけられた形である。布を切る仕立て屋を思い浮かべると、綴りと意味を思い出しやすい。

cīsōria は複数形で、語末の s は交差する 2 枚の刃と考えると覚えやすい。数えるときは a pair of scissors、two pairs of scissors とし、These scissors are sharp. のように are で受ける。
