then は、古英語 þonne「その時、それから」を受け継ぐ語。話題になっている時点を指す「その時」と、出来事の続きへ進む「それから」が中心だ。今ここを指す now に対して、then は会話や文章の中にある時点へ視線を移す語と考えると、使い方がつながる。
I lived there then. は「その頃、そこに住んでいた」。前の話から、いつのことかが分かる。一方、Wash your hands, then sit down. なら「手を洗って、それから座って」で、順番を示している。If you're ready, then let's go. の then は、条件を受けた「それなら」に当たる。時間の先へ進む場合と、前の話を受けて次の判断へ進む場合を、一続きの流れとして覚えよう。
