past は、峠や水路のように「こちら側から向こう側へ通り抜ける場所」を表すイメージから、ある地点を通り越した状態を表すようになった。そこから空間では「〜を過ぎて」、時間では「すでに通り過ぎた時点」、つまり「過去」を意味する。

pass by（そばを通り過ぎる）やpast experience（過去の経験）では、共通して「基準点を越えて、後ろに残った」という感覚がある。past を見たら「通り越した先・後ろに残ったもの」と覚えると、過去・過ぎて・過去の、という三つの用法をまとめて理解できる。
