覚え方
古英語 lǣstan（追従する・実行する）から、英語 last「続く・持続する」が生まれた。何かのあとを追ってその状態を保つ、あるいは決められたことを実行し続けるイメージから、「長持ちする」「継続する」という意味になった。
lǣstan は *leys-（追跡する・記録する）につながる。時間の流れを追い続けることが「持続する」ことになるので、last は期間についても物についても使える。last を見たら「あとを追いながら続く」と考え、How long will it last? を「どのくらい続きますか」と結びつけるとよい。
