futureの語源と覚え方

ラテン語 futūrus（これから来る・未来の）から。これは「ある・なる」という動詞の未来分詞で、これから存在することになるものを表した。
背後の *bʰuH-（なる・生じる）は「生成する」を表し、英語の be（be・been）も同じ流れを汲む。つまり future は時間の呼び名である以前に、まだ無いが、これからそうなるものという発想でできている。
用法では、the future（未来）のほか、複数形 futures が金融の「先物」を指す点に注意したい。future perfect（未来完了）・futuristic（未来的な）も同じ系統である。
