覚え方
ラテン語 probō（形は probāre、「良いと認める・試す」）は、probus（良い・実直な）と動詞化語尾 -ō から成る。probus は pro-（前へ） と、bʰuH-（なる・生じる） に結びつき、「前へ出て、実際に良さが生じるか試す」イメージを持つ。そこから「試す・検査する」さらに「探る・調査する」へ意味が発展した。
probe は、細い探針を対象へ前に進めて内部を確かめる感覚で覚えるとよい。probō の pro- と *bʰuH- を手がかりに、prove（良いと証明する）・probable（試してみてよさそうな→ありそうな）も「確かめて良さを判断する」仲間としてまとめると覚えやすい。
