覚え方
英語 history はラテン語 historia（歴史・物語）にさかのぼる。historia（歴史・物語）の背景には、見ることを表す *** weyd-（見る）** がある。過去の出来事を「見て確かめ、記録する」ことが原義のイメージ。
そこから、出来事を並べた「物語」や「記録」へ意味が広がり、現在の「歴史」や、それを研究する「歴史学」になった。history は単なる昔話ではなく、過去を調べて記述したものを指す。
hist- を見たら「見て確かめた過去の記録」と考えると覚えやすい。historic（歴史的な）・historical（歴史に関する）も同じ history から広がった語だ。
