覚え方
history（歴史）+ -ical（〜に関する）。ラテン語 historicus（歴史に関する）に英語の -al（関係を表す形容詞を作る） が重なった形で、芯にあるのは *weyd-（見る）、つまり見て記録することである。
historical は事実として「過去に属する・記録された歴史に関する」を表す、中立的な語。historical evidence（史料）・historical figures（歴史上の人物）・historical research（史学研究）のように、重要かどうかは問わない。
重要性を言うのは historic のほう。historical は「歴史のジャンルに入る」、historic は「歴史を作った」。historical accuracy（時代考証の正しさ）は歴史ものの作品に、a historic day（歴史的な一日）は出来事の大きさに使う、と例で覚えるとよい。
