覚え方
former は古英語 forma（順序や等級で最初の位置にある）に由来する比較級で、forma（最初の）から「より前の・先の」という意味が育った語。順序の前方にあるものを指すため、「以前の」「前者の」へつながる。
二つを比べるとき、former は時間的に先に出たもの、または文中で先に挙げたものを指す。「former A and latter B」なら、former が前者、latter が後者になる。
forma の背景にある *per-（前に・通り抜ける）と *pr-（最初の・初めの）を、前へ進む・最初に来るという共通イメージで覚えるとよい。primary や prior も「先・前」と結びつけて整理できる。
