覚え方
ラテン語 expandō（広げる）= ex-（外へ・徹底的に）+ pandō（広げる・開く）。折りたたまれていたものを外へ向けて開く、というのが原義である。
pandō の底には *peth₂-（広げる） があり、帆や布や翼を張り広げる感じ。そこから物の大きさが「拡大する・膨張する」、事業を「拡張する」、さらに話や説明を開いて詳しくする「詳述する」（expand on ...）まで広がった。
同じ *peth₂- の仲間には expanse（広がり）・expansion（拡大）・patent（開かれた→特許）がある。pand／pans を見たら「閉じたものを開いて広げる」と読むとよい。
