inflateの語源と覚え方

ラテン語 īnflō（吹き込む・膨らませる）＝ in-（中へ）+ flō（吹く）。その過去分詞 īnflātus の形が英語に入った。「中へ息を吹き込む」がそのまま「膨らませる」である。
in- の背後は *en-（中へ）、flō の背後は *bʰleh₁-（吹く）。息を吹き出すイメージで、blow（吹く）・deflate（空気を抜く）・flatulence（腹のガス）と同族。fl- で「吹く・膨らむ」と読むとつながる。
タイヤや風船を膨らませる物理の意味から、価格や数字を「水増しする」、経済で物価を「膨張させる」へ広がった。自動詞で「急騰する」も同じ発想。逆は deflate、名詞は inflation。
