balloonの語源と覚え方
覚え方
イタリア語 pallone（ボール・気球）から。中身は palla（球）+ -one（指大辞） で「でかい玉」が原義。英語へ入る途中で頭が b になった balone の形を経ている。
膨らませて浮かぶ気球や風船は、まさに「大きな玉」。-one は大きくする、-ino は小さくすると対にして覚えると、ballerina（-ino）と balloon（-one）が同時に整理できる。
補足: 動詞で「風船のように急膨張する」（costs ballooned＝費用が膨れ上がった）。漫画のふきだしも speech balloon。
